Solidifying Relations to scale up Carbon Farming in Kazakhstan
March 19th, 2025
On March 19th, Alexey Ivanov, Director of the BRICS Competition Law and Policy Centre and core team member of the Eurasian Carbon Project met with Murat Temirzhanov, Chairman of the Committee for Land Resource Management under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The discussion focused on strengthening institutional ties and to scale up carbon farming in line with Kazakhstan’s national strategies for sustainable land use and climate action.
The exchange builds on the momentum generated through previous cooperation and joint research, most notably the case study “Carbon Farming in Kazakhstan: Unlocking Potential” —developed in partnership with BRICS Competition Law and Policy Centre, International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis and TALAP Center for Applied Research. This study has helped shape the early vision and technical framework for carbon farming in Kazakhstan, providing a reference point for further collaboration.
Both sides acknowledged the growing importance of institutional coordination and long-term planning, with the Kazakhstani side confirming its readiness to take the next step toward a structured and scalable approach to carbon farming. While specific project components remain under discussion, the meeting confirmed that mutual understanding and trust continue to deepen—creating the conditions needed for practical, large-scale work on the ground.
This evolving partnership signals a broader commitment to climate innovation in the region, with Kazakhstan emerging as a key partner in driving forward sustainable solutions in land management and emissions reduction.
Further developments will be shared as the joint work enters its next phase.
